Newham Greens promise ‘tough but fair’ opposition to the Labour council, following announcement of Mayor Fiaz’s cabinet

Newham Green Party has offered congratulations to the councillors selected to serve in Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz’s new cabinet.

Cllr Nate Higgins, newly elected Green Party councillor for Stratford Olympic Park ward, said

“We’re encouraged that Mayor Fiaz has dubbed this her “getting stuff done” cabinet, and we hope this new cabinet can live up to that name. From tackling the cost of living, to reducing air pollution, litter and flying tipping, anti-social behaviour and hate crime – there is still so much to ‘get done’ in Newham.

Cllr Danny Keeling, the other Green Party councillor elected to represent Stratford Olympic Park ward on May 5th, commented “It is great to see this new council starting to take shape, with Newham Greens as the only opposition in the council chamber. I just really hope that this is not just political rhetoric from the mayor of 'getting stuff done', like the Tory government does with 'leveling up'. As they say, the proof is in the pudding."

This follows the Green Party growing it’s support in the borough, winning two seats and ending Labour’s 12 year run of holding every single seat in the council chamber, making the Greens the official opposition. Overall across Newham, Labour received 100,535 votes (61.56%), whilst the Green Party achieved 27,268 votes (16.70%), now the borough’s second party, pushing the Conservatives into third place on 23,049 votes (14.11%)

Cllr Higgins added “Your Green Party councillors will be tough, but fair, not just for our ward but for all Newham residents, as we work with the new cabinet as Newham’s main opposition party. We will work hard to ensure social and climate justice for our community”.
