The Newham Green Party is pleased to announce our full support for the London Cyclists and Newham Cyclists #ClimateSafeStreets campaign.
1. Borough-wide Low Traffic Neighbourhoods and cycle friendly connection between them.
2. Good quality cycle provision for the whole of Romford Road and Barking Road.
3. A 20 mph speed limit on all borough roads.
4. All schools to benefit from school street treatment.
5. Effective enforcement of parking rules across the borough.
These commitments form a key part of Newham Green Party's plans for improving the borough, with well planned and fairly consulted improvement projects, using infrastructure funding from developers that the council have not yet allocated.
Newham Green Party believe that these are realistic and achievable targets. More information on these London Cycling Campaign & Newham Cyclists asks is at https://lcc.org.uk/Newham-asks
The Mayor of London has committed to a zero-carbon London by 2030. The government has committed to half of all urban journeys being walked or cycled by 2030. Now every London borough including Newham needs to take action to help meet these targets.
Newham Green Party Mayoral candidate Rob Callender commented:
"I am very pleased to and wholeheartedly commit to the five Newham Cyclists' Asks for the 2022 local elections.
As well as Barking Road and Romford Roads, we also need to improve safe walking, wheeling and cycling provision in the south and south-east of the borough, which is somewhat neglected.
I can't afford to own a car, although I do drive, and I commute to work by bicycle from North Woolwich to Hackney, via the Greenway in the daytime, and home in the dark via the Lower Lea Crossing/Tidal Basin Roundabout and the North Woolwich Road through Silvertown. I am aware of how disjointed cycle provision is in the borough and how much improvement is needed to encourage more people to cycle for every day transport, as well as for health, leisure and sport.
Newham has been dragging it's feet for far too long when it comes to action on the environment and climate change. A Green mayor with Green councillors would ensure firm action is taken, with no shying away from the tough decisions needed, whilst ensuring that local residents are part of the process throughout."
